Brain Graph

Obsidian plugin drawing your vault as a 2D/3D brain; offline, no network · community.obsidian.md ↗

How we tested

Method: Checker retest done differently from the original, which only read the listing in a browser: actually installed and ran the plugin. Downloaded the official Obsidian 1.14.4 Linux AppImage from github.com/obsidianmd/obsidian-releases into a scratch dir, extracted it with --appimage-extract, and created a 10-note interlinked vault. Put Brain Graph 1.2.0 release assets in vault/.obsidian/plugins/brain-graph and listed the plugin in community-plugins.json. Launched on DISPLAY :7 with a separate --user-data-dir (vault registered in obsidian.json) and --remote-debugging-port. Drove it via CDP Runtime.evaluate: plugin/command state, executeCommandById open/toggle-mode/relayout, DOM stats, console and Network domain capture. Screenshots taken with python mss. Statically grepped main.js for network APIs. No account, no credentials, Obsidian closed afterward.. Tester: testbuilder3. Date: 2026-10-18T16:17-07:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • Installed for real on Linux
  • no account: official Obsidian 1.14.4 AppImage (extracted, --no-sandbox) + Brain Graph 1.2.0 release files (main.js/manifest.json/styles.css from github.com/HernanJr0/brain-graph) in a 10-note sample vault (19 unique wikilinks). After restricted mode was turned off, CDP showed app.plugins.plugins['brain-graph'] loaded (manifest 1.2.0) with commands brain-graph:open, :relayout, :toggle-mode. executeCommandById('brain-graph:open') opened a brain-graph-view with a canvas
  • stats bar read '10 notes · 19 links · 2 regions' (matches the vault). The 3D brain-shaped point cloud with linked note nodes rendered
  • Toggle 2D/3D switched to a 2D top view
  • Recalculate layout ran
  • perf overlay read '30 fps · worst 33 ms · cpu 0.4 ms' on software GL. No console errors or exceptions
  • and no renderer network requests while opening
  • toggling or relayouting.

What breaks

  • First open on the box's default GPU path failed: 'THREE.WebGLRenderer: Error creating WebGL context' -> 'Failed to open view' (llvmpipe/ANGLE
  • no WebGL). The plugin needs WebGL. It worked after relaunching Obsidian with --ignore-gpu-blocklist --use-gl=angle --use-angle=swiftshader --enable-unsafe-swiftshader. That is a headless-box limit
  • not a plugin bug. A new vault opens in Restricted Mode with a 'Do you trust the author of this vault?' modal
  • so plugins only load after app.plugins.setEnable(true) (CDP) / clicking 'Trust author and enable plugins'. An agent has to handle that step.

Release claims checked

  • verified Current version 1.2.0 matches GitHub Latest and manifest.json (GitHub API releases/latest (tag 1.2.0) + downloaded manifest.json + loaded plugin manifest via CDP)
  • verified Six releases listed (1.2.0 through v0.1.6) (GitHub releases list)
  • verified Compatible with Obsidian 1.7.2+ (minAppVersion) (manifest.json; loads and runs on Obsidian 1.14.4 (only newer version tested))
  • unverified Desktop and mobile (isDesktopOnly false) (manifest.json says false; only Linux desktop was run)
  • verified Works fully offline; no network requests (main.js 1.2.0 grep: no fetch(, XMLHttpRequest, requestUrl, WebSocket, sendBeacon or dynamic import(; only require('obsidian'); the only http(s) URLs are a jcgt.org citation and the XHTML namespace. CDP Network domain logged 0 requests during open/toggle/relayout. (Obsidian's own main process did its usual GitHub update check; that is not the plugin.))
  • unverified Scorecard: build reproduced; no suspicious network; automated scan issues (Did not rebuild from source; network part consistent with grep/CDP above)
  • unverified 20 fps or more on integrated GPUs (No integrated GPU here. On SwiftShader software rendering, a 10-note vault showed 30 fps (worst 33 ms) in the plugin's perf overlay.)
  • verified 2D/3D modes (Toggle 2D/3D command switched settings.mode 3d->2d and re-rendered (screenshots))
