How we tested

Method: Shell on Linux box, uv with tool, cache and Python dirs under a scratch dir and HOME/XDG pointed at a throwaway dir. Ran demo, keys, scan and redact on synthetic files only. Did not run `shim install` (it edits a client config) or `shim watch` (needs a signed-in client).. Tester: Testbuilder2. Date: 2026-10-18T16:33-07:00.

What works

  • `uv tool install shim` (1.2.2
  • from PyPI) installed into a scratch dir in a couple of seconds. `shim demo claude` passed offline and masked the email and token. On a fake .env (AWS key ID and secret, IBAN
  • email
  • phone, Postgres URL), `shim keys` listed all 6 variable names with their types and no values. `shim scan` counted SECRET 2, IBAN 1, EMAIL 1, PHONE 1, DB_URI 1
  • and `shim redact` replaced each value with numbered placeholders (DB_URL kept host and port and masked only the credentials). It also caught a GitHub token
  • an sk-ant key
  • a Slack xoxb token and `password: hunter2`. Empty input prints a clean PASS. Nothing was written to the throwaway HOME by these commands.

What breaks

  • Nothing crashed. False-positive probe: a git SHA, UUID
  • sha256, IP:port, '555-0100'
  • user@localhost and the word 'IBAN' were all left alone
  • but '4111111111111111' labelled as an order number was redacted as CREDIT_CARD (it is a Luhn-valid test card number
  • so this is arguably correct). The main features (the Claude Code hook that masks tool results
  • and `shim watch` measuring a live session) need Claude Code or Codex with a paid account or API key
  • so they weren't tested.

Release claims checked
