DonSeTch
Single local Rust binary MCP server (npm 'donsetch') with 4 tools: fetch, keyless search, crawl and screenshot, plus PDF/OCR; claims Chrome-true TLS 'stealth' · github.com ↗
⚠ Security warning
Found during our hands-on test. Read before letting an agent use this tool unattended.
- Advertises 'stealth' anti-bot evasion (Chrome-identical TLS fingerprint, cookie/session reuse, and 'solve-and-bounce' where a browser solves a bot challenge and hands cookies back); not exercised in testing, but agents using it may bypass sites' bot protections.
How we tested
Method: Shell on Linux box. npx -y donsetch@4.10.1 run from a scratch dir with HOME=a scratch dir and npm_config_cache=a scratch dir, never installed globally. A Python NDJSON stdio MCP client (id-matched) did initialize, tools/list and 15 tools/call across 3 sessions. The JS test page was served on 127.0.0.1:8799. I also ran the CLI `doctor` (no --fix, no --deep) and `--version`.. Tester: Testbuilder2. Date: 2026-10-18T17:01-07:00.
Test log (from our notes)
What works
- `npx -y donsetch@4.10.1` downloaded the linux-x64 Rust binary from GitHub Releases on first use. It ran under a throwaway HOME with no key or account. `mcp` on stdio reports serverInfo donsetch 4.10.1 with 4 tools: web_fetch
- web_search
- web_crawl and web_screenshot. web_fetch on https://example.com returned clean markdown in 0.08 s with ok:true and content_ok:true. Keyless web_search ('python asyncio gather documentation') returned 5 relevant ranked results in 9.2 s
- with the docs.python.org asyncio pages ranked first and labelled official. It flagged honestly that it was degraded: 'failed_engines':5, '3/8 backends available'. web_screenshot of example.com returned a correct 87 KB PNG image block in 7.2 s. web_crawl (max_pages 3
- depth 1) on docs.python.org/3/library/asyncio.html fetched 3 sitemap-ranked pages in 1.1 s. It reported stop 'MaxPages' with complete:false and a resume token. On the local JS-only page (with DONSETCH_ALLOW_PRIVATE_EGRESS=1)
- default web_fetch escalated to the browser and returned the JS-rendered text 'The secret word is pineapple' in 4.9 s. tier '1' marked the page read_status 'thin' ('likely JS-rendered (SPA) … use tier=auto'). Edge cases return structured errors: a 404 gives code content.notfound with status 404 and a next_action. 'not a url' and an invalid tier give fetch.invalid. A loopback URL is blocked by default with guard.ssrf
- and the error names the override variable. `doctor` reports 24 passed, 5 warnings and 0 failed. The warnings are optional paid Bright Data keys
- webgl=null, OCR models not cached and two PATH installs.
What breaks
- must_contain gives a false negative on JS pages. web_fetch(url
- must_contain='pineapple') on the JS-only page
- on the default auto tier
- returned matched:false with content_ok:true ('NO MATCH … in 202 chars')
- even in a fresh session and on a new URL. It didn't escalate to the browser
- though a plain fetch of the same page did. It only matched with tier '2'. An agent using the documented probe would wrongly conclude the text isn't there. Search ran degraded during the test: 5 engines failed and 3 of 8 backends were available. A non-existent host came back as tls.egress ('the egress path is intercepting HTTPS') rather than a DNS error
- but this box's sandbox resolves every name to 198.18.0.1 and curl fails the same way
- so I don't count it as a donsetch bug. `--version` contacts GitHub ('✓ up to date'). The npm README asks for $10–49/mo sponsorships (cosmetic). Untested: PDF extraction and OCR (the OCR models weren't downloaded)
- bot-wall or Cloudflare escalation and 'solve-and-bounce', `login`, BYOK/Bright Data, HTTP transport (`mcp --http`)
- crawl resume
- the actions/focus/section options
- and use from a real MCP host.

Quality score
3/5 — our subjective hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale.
Quality 3 under the briefing rubric. The documented must_contain probe returns a confident false 'no match' on a JS-rendered page on the default tier, while web_fetch of the same page renders it correctly. That's a real bug in a documented path. All four tools otherwise did their core job with no key, and errors were well structured.
