mbox-mcp

MCP server for local email archives: index a Google Takeout .mbox or folder of .eml, search by keyword/sender/subject/date, fully parse one message; no OAuth/IMAP/cloud · github.com ↗

How we tested

Method: Shell on the Linux box, Node 20.19.2. Local npm install under a scratch dir. A Python raw JSON-RPC MCP stdio client (no host app) with a Python-generated synthetic mbox (52 messages) and ground-truth JSON. Added an .eml directory, CRLF and mboxo files, empty/non-mbox/missing inputs, a growing file, and generated mboxes of 120k (674 MB), 130k, 200k and 400k (2.2 GB) messages plus a 130k-message 13 MB file. A fresh server per large file, with RSS sampled from /proc. No real mail data.. Tester: testbuilder3. Date: 2026-10-18T17:05-07:00.

Test log (from our notes)

What works

  • `npm install mbox-mcp` (0.1.2) took ~3 s
  • no account
  • key or network needed to run. Over MCP stdio: initialize gives serverInfo 'mbox' (it reports version 0.1.0 while the package is 0.1.2)
  • tools/list returns open_archive
  • search_messages and get_message. Test data: a synthetic mboxrd with 52 messages (7 senders
  • including José Álvarez, 田中 太郎, Zoë Ørsted and Карина Петрова
  • RFC 2047 subjects in Cyrillic, Japanese and Spanish
  • 7 threads with Re:/In-Reply-To
  • 3 attachments
  • HTML-only messages
  • one malformed message
  • one raw 8-bit UTF-8 subject). open_archive count
  • date range and top senders all matched ground truth. Envelope subject+from was exact for 50/51 well-formed messages. 13 of 16 search checks matched ground truth exactly: unicode from (José, 田中)
  • unicode subjects (привет, ご連絡)
  • query
  • date range
  • raw UTF-8 subject (Köln)
  • and body_query including an HTML-only body and a >From-quoted line (52 scanned
  • not capped). get_message returned all 3 attachments with exact filename (incl. 'фото отпуск.jpg'), MIME type and byte size
  • with no attachment content in the output (418-576 chars). HTML-only messages are tag-stripped and flagged in bodyNote. Bad ids return clear errors (out of range
  • or schema rejects negatives). Edge inputs give clear errors: empty file
  • non-mbox file
  • missing path
  • empty directory. A .eml directory works (3 messages, RFC 2047 Q subject 'Café'
  • body search
  • notes.txt ignored). CRLF mbox works. The cache re-indexes after the file grows (52 to 53). A 674 MB / 120,000-message mbox indexed in 2.1-2.5 s
  • cached subject search took 0.03 s
  • get_message on the last message worked
  • the body scan cap reported scanned=500
  • capped=true honestly. A garbage stdin line didn't kill the server.

What breaks

  • Bugs: (1) open_archive throws 'Maximum call stack size exceeded' on archives with about 125k+ dated messages. It happened at 130k (730 MB), 200k (1.1 GB) and 400k (2.2 GB)
  • and also with 130k tiny messages in a 13 MB file. Without Date headers, 130k worked
  • which points to Math.min(...stamps)/Math.max(...stamps) at dist/index.js:45-46. The index is still built and cached
  • so search_messages on the same file works afterward. This contradicts 'Takeout… 100k+ messages'. Seen on Node 20.19.2
  • other Node versions untested. (2) body_query misses matches past 8,000 characters: a needle at about 12k characters in message 11 wasn't found (0 of 52 scanned)
  • because bodyMatches searches the 8,000-char truncated body. (3) A Subject placed after 18 KB of other headers is missing from the envelope (subject null)
  • so subject/query searches miss it
  • get_message still shows it. Documented-adjacent: only the first 16 KiB is parsed. (4) The search_messages description says it searches 'envelopes (from/to/subject/date)'
  • but there's no 'to' filter and query only matches from+subject: query 'jon@example.net' found 0 of 51. Smaller issues: a broken encoded-word '=?utf-8?B?!!!broken!!!?=' decodes to garbage ('n$z') instead of staying raw
  • mboxrd '>From ' lines aren't unescaped in get_message bodies
  • peak RSS during indexing grew with file size (910 MB for a 674 MB file, 2.6 GB for a 2.2 GB file, 164 MB for 13 MB)
  • even though the README says only the first 16 KiB of the current message is held (cause not investigated)
  • plain mboxo with an unquoted body 'From ' line over-splits (2 messages became 3
  • this is documented)
  • body_query scans the first 500 candidates in file order
  • so on big archives it can report 0 matches unless narrowed (reported as capped=true
  • as documented). Not tested: Claude Code/Desktop hosts
  • real Google Takeout or Thunderbird exports (synthetic only), Windows paths, PST/Maildir (out of scope).

Release claims checked

  • verified Everything stays on your machine; no OAuth/IMAP/cloud (README)
  • still_broken Built for large archives: Takeout mbox often multi-GB with 100k+ messages (README)
  • unverified Streaming index; only the current message's first 16 KiB is ever held (README)
  • verified Honest body search: capped scan, reports how many it scanned (README)
  • verified Attachments listed with names and sizes, never dumped into context (README)
  • verified mboxrd splits cleanly; mboxo can over-split (README)

Quality score

3/5 — our subjective hands-on rating on a 1–5 scale.

Quality 3 under the rubric: every tool was exercised on Linux over raw MCP stdio, with ground truth and many edge cases, so agent_completable is full. But I found real bugs in documented paths. (1) The README says it is 'built for large archives… 100k+ messages', yet open_archive fails with 'Maximum call stack size exceeded' once an archive has about 125k+ dated messages. 120k works; 130k, 200k and 400k fail, even in a 13 MB file. Cause: Math.min(...stamps) in dist/index.js. (2) body_query silently misses text past the first 8,000 characters of a body, because it searches the truncated body. (3) A Subject header that sits past the 16 KiB envelope capture is lost from the index. Not a 4 because of those bugs; not tested inside an MCP host app (Claude Code/Desktop need an account). Maturity notes, not scored: 0 stars, npm 0.1.2 published 2026-10-18, GitHub HEAD 41b4d29 has the same code.
